Little ways to be a helper: How connection makes us feel strong

Connection makes us strong, young children cleaning up plastic trash

Sometimes as kids you hear about things happening around you and you start to feel scared because you can’t control so many things around you. It can feel overwhelming when you feel this way and sometimes you don’t know what to do. One thing you can always do is find a way to help someone else.

When you help other people, it makes you feel really happy! Why? Helping other people feels good because when you are kind, your brain releases “happiness chemicals” called neurotransmitters. When this happens, you start to feel good. Helping others also helps you to feel confident, strong and connected to other people.

You don’t need to do something big or have a lot of money to show others that you care. There are lots of little ways to become a helper. Here are some ideas to help you get started!

At Home

  • Help your parents to set the table for a meal
  • Clean up your toys and games after you play with them
  • Take your dog for a walk around the neighborhood
  • Include your siblings when you are playing a game

At School

  • Volunteer to help your teacher before or after school (with your parent’s permission)
  • Help a classmate with their homework
  • Offer to include or play with another kid at recess

In My Community

  • Go on a walk and pick up trash along the way
  • Draw a picture or write a thank-you note to a community helper (firefighter, teacher, or mail person)
  • Donate old toys, clothes, or books to a charity
  • Attend an event that raises awareness about something you think is important
