School-Based Psychoeducational Groups: Helping Students Thrive

At Mirjam Quinn & Associates, we’re proud to partner with several schools, including Midlothian School District and St. Barnabas Elementary to provide on-site social–emotional learning groups designed to help students develop confidence, resilience, and real-world coping skills. Our school-based psychoeducational programs are led by licensed clinicians who specialize in supporting children and teens with emotional regulation, anxiety, and executive functioning challenges, using interventions that work.

Surf the Waves: Emotion Regulation Group

Our Surf the Waves group teaches students how to notice, name, and manage big feelings. Using mindfulness-based strategies, movement, and playful activities, children learn to “ride the wave” of emotion rather than getting swept away by it. This group helps kids:

  • Understand their emotions and triggers
  • Build coping and calming strategies
  • Improve relationships and self-control

School Anxiety & Avoidance Group

School can feel overwhelming for many students. Our School Anxiety & Avoidance group provides tools and peer support to help children and adolescents manage worry, perfectionism, and avoidance behaviors. We focus on:

  • Reducing morning battles and school refusal
  • Building confidence through gradual exposure and success
  • Teaching parents and teachers collaborative strategies that work

Executive Functioning Skills Group

For students who struggle with organization, focus, and follow-through, our Executive Functioning Group helps strengthen the brain’s “management system.” We teach practical, developmentally appropriate skills for:

  • Time management and planning
  • Task initiation and completion
  • Flexible thinking and frustration tolerance

Why School-Based Groups Work

By meeting students where they already are — at school — we remove barriers to access and create a supportive, familiar environment. Our groups complement academic learning and help schools foster emotionally healthy, ready-to-learn students.
